Identity compression

A tactic that turns a complex cause into a simple, repeatable symbol or label.

Identity compression is a tactic that turns a complex cause, group, or campaign into a simple symbol, slogan, or label that people can recognize and repeat. In cybersecurity, it matters because attackers and defenders both rely on fast recognition. A compact identity can make a phishing brand, malware family, or threat actor easier to remember, easier to spread, and easier to coordinate around.

Attackers use identity compression when they reuse the same name, visual style, or lure theme across many messages so victims feel they are dealing with a familiar source. Defenders use a similar idea when they collapse noisy activity into a clear threat label for triage, reporting, and response. The risk is oversimplification: one label can hide changing infrastructure, multiple operators, or mixed motives. Good analysis preserves the original evidence, then compresses the identity only after the context is understood.
