Hyper-V

Microsoft’s hypervisor technology for creating and managing virtual machines on Windows.

Hyper-V is Microsoft’s built-in hypervisor for creating and managing virtual machines on Windows. It runs below the guest operating system and provides the isolation layer that separates a VM from the host and from other VMs. This makes it a common choice for enterprise virtualization, sandboxes, and security tooling.

In cyber security, Hyper-V matters because the VM boundary is often treated as a containment barrier. Attackers may try to abuse the host-side management stack, such as services, RPC interfaces, or device emulation, to weaken that boundary or gain code execution inside the guest. Defenders use Hyper-V for safer malware analysis, application isolation, and workstation protection, but the security of the sandbox still depends on hardened configuration and tightly controlled control-plane access.
