Hot path

The part of a system where decisions must happen quickly because delays affect operations.

The hot path is the part of a system that handles time-sensitive decisions or requests, where even small delays can disrupt operations. In security software, this may be the code that classifies a login attempt, routes an alert, or decides whether to block a transaction. Because the hot path must respond quickly, it is often optimized for speed, simplicity, and predictable behavior.

Hot paths matter in cyber security because attackers often target them indirectly. If they can slow down, confuse, or overload the decision point, they may create outages, bypass checks, or force unsafe fallback behavior. Defenders use narrow schemas, thresholds, logging, and human fallback paths to keep hot-path automation safe. In AI-driven systems, this is where bounded decisions become risky if confidence is too low or the model is trusted too much.
