Hot end

The printer assembly that heats filament so it can be pushed through the nozzle.

The hot end is the heated part of an FDM 3D printer that melts filament before it passes through the nozzle. It includes the heater block, thermal sensor, heat break, and nozzle, and it must hold a stable temperature so plastic flows evenly without burning, clogging, or under-extruding.

In security terms, the hot end matters because it is a control point where software settings become physical output. A malicious or misconfigured slicer profile, firmware change, or networked printer command can raise temperatures, alter flow, or damage the machine, turning a print job into wasted material or a safety issue. Defenders watch thermal limits, lock down firmware, and validate material profiles to reduce that risk.
