High-availability pair

Two linked systems configured so one can take over if the other fails or is taken offline.

A high-availability pair is two linked systems configured so one can automatically take over if the other fails, is patched, or is taken offline. In security-sensitive environments, this setup helps keep services available without forcing a full outage during maintenance.

High-availability pairs are common in firewalls, VPN gateways, load balancers, and other edge appliances. They matter in cyber security because defenders often have to patch both nodes carefully to avoid creating uneven exposure or breaking failover. Attackers also pay attention to these pairs: if one node is vulnerable, misconfigured, or left unpatched, it can become the weaker path into the environment even when the other node is updated.
