HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a flexible image container format that can store one or more images, thumbnails, metadata, and related data structures. Unlike a simple bitmap file, a HEIF file may include nested boxes and codec-specific payloads, which makes parsing more complex for software that opens it.
In cyber security, that complexity matters because upload services, preview generators, and thumbnailing pipelines often decode HEIF automatically. If a decoder has a memory-safety bug, bounds-checking error, or validation flaw, a crafted file can trigger a crash, leak data, or in some cases lead to code execution. Defenders reduce risk by validating file structure, isolating decoders in a sandbox, patching image libraries, and re-encoding untrusted uploads before further processing.
