HAFNIUM is Microsoft’s threat label for a cluster of activity associated with exploitation of Exchange servers and espionage-style intrusion. It is not a malware family or a single person; it is a way to describe a set of tactics, techniques, and infrastructure that Microsoft observed being used in related attacks.
It matters because Exchange often sits at the center of email, authentication, and internal collaboration. When attackers compromise it, they may bypass normal access controls, read mail, harvest credentials, and drop web shells or other tools for persistence. Defenders use the label to track patterns, hunt for indicators, and prioritize emergency patching, log review, and server rebuilds. In practice, “HAFNIUM” appears in reports when defenders are warning about Exchange exploitation that can open a path deeper into a network.
