Guest environment

The isolated system running inside a VM, separate from the computer that hosts it.

A guest environment is the operating system and software running inside a virtual machine (VM). It is separated from the host computer, which provides the underlying hardware and runs the virtualization software. The guest can have its own files, processes, and network activity.

This separation can contain risky or untrusted activity, but it also creates a visibility boundary: security tools running only on the host may not observe everything happening inside the guest. In real deployments, defenders may install endpoint monitoring inside the VM to inspect processes, commands, and file activity. They should also verify what telemetry is collected and where it is sent, since it may include sensitive data. Monitoring a guest environment improves visibility into that VM but does not automatically cover the host or other, cloud-based environments.
