GS1 Digital Link

A standard that turns product identifiers into web-readable links for interoperable scanning and verification.

GS1 Digital Link is an open standard that encodes a product identifier, such as a GTIN, into a web URL or QR code that software can resolve. Instead of a label containing only static text, the code can point scanners to structured data about the item, including authenticity, product details, and lifecycle information. This makes it useful for interoperable scanning across brands, retailers, repair services, and resale platforms.

In cyber security, GS1 Digital Link matters because the code is only the entry point; the real trust depends on the backend record and the web service that answers it. Defenders use it to support verification, traceability, and controlled access to product data. Attackers may clone codes, redirect scans, or exploit weakly governed records to mislead buyers or service partners. Strong implementations therefore combine signed data, tamper-resistant labels, version control, and access policies so the identifier remains trustworthy across the product’s life cycle.
