Git backend

The server-side system that stores repository data and handles Git requests.

A Git backend is the server-side infrastructure that stores repository data and processes Git requests, such as pushes, fetches, and clones. It may coordinate updates to branches and prepare or reuse compressed data bundles, called packfiles, to transfer repository contents efficiently. Developers can continue using standard Git commands even when an organization changes the systems behind them.

In cybersecurity, the backend matters because it is a central point for protecting source code and enforcing access controls. Weak permissions or inadequate logging can expose code or allow unauthorized changes; performance problems can also disrupt development and security reviews. In large or heavily used repositories, operators monitor request latency, failed pushes, access records, and branch protections, while scaling storage and request handling to manage load.
