Funding dependency is a situation in which a company or ecosystem relies heavily on a limited set of investors or funding sources to finance growth. For a startup, this can arise when local capital is insufficient for expansion and the company depends on foreign investors or a particular class of funds.
In cyber security, concentrated funding can affect an organization’s ability to maintain security teams, systems, and incident-response capacity. If a key investor withdraws or funding conditions change, security work may be delayed or cut. Attackers may also exploit financially strained organizations, while defenders can reduce risk by planning for continuity, diversifying funding where possible, and protecting essential security budgets.
