Fraud risk

The chance that a conversation, payment flow, or relationship will be abused for financial gain.

Fraud risk is the chance that a conversation, payment flow, or ongoing relationship will be abused for financial gain. In cyber security, it is not limited to malware or account takeover; it also covers social engineering, impersonation, and manipulation of trust inside chat groups, customer support threads, marketplaces, and business workflows.

It matters because attackers often do not need to break encryption or bypass strong systems if they can persuade a person to approve a transfer, reveal credentials, or follow a fake instruction. Fraud risk rises when messages feel familiar, urgent, or exclusive, since those cues can hide deception. Defenders reduce it by separating approval from request, verifying sensitive instructions through a different channel, and requiring checks for payments, account changes, and unusual requests. In practice, fraud risk analysis helps organizations spot where trust can be borrowed and turned into loss.
