Frame Decoder

Code that processes image or media frames, which can become attack surface when handling untrusted input.

A frame decoder is software that reads and converts individual frames in image or media data into a form an application or device can display or process. It may handle compressed or specially formatted input, so malformed data can expose bugs in parsing, memory allocation, or bounds checking.

In cyber security, a decoder is an attack surface whenever it processes untrusted content. A memory-safety flaw, such as an out-of-bounds write, could corrupt memory and potentially enable code execution if an attacker can reach the vulnerable decoding path. Defenses include using memory-safe implementations where practical, validating input, testing decoders with fuzzing, and installing security updates. For Android devices, checking the installed security patch level-not just the operating-system version-helps confirm that relevant decoder fixes are present.
