Forward Error Correction

A method that adds redundancy so receivers can recover data more reliably from noisy signals.

Forward Error Correction (FEC) is a technique that adds carefully structured redundant information to transmitted data. A receiver uses that information to detect and correct some errors without asking the sender to retransmit. It can make communication more reliable when signals are weakened or disrupted by noise, interference, or distance.

In cybersecurity, FEC helps maintain dependable wireless links, but it does not provide encryption or authenticate devices. In Bluetooth Low Energy, Coded PHY uses FEC to improve robustness and potentially extend range, while reducing data throughput. Attackers may still exploit weaknesses in pairing or access controls if they can reach a device; defenders should treat link reliability and security controls as separate concerns.
