A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is an outside specialist placed close to a customer’s workflow to help move a system into production. In cyber security, FDEs often sit between product teams, security teams, and operations, translating a tool into something that fits real access controls, data flows, and business rules. They can speed up secure rollout of detection platforms, identity systems, or AI-powered defenses.
The security risk is dependency and exposure. An FDE may need broad permissions, access to logs, secrets, or production systems, which makes identity management, least privilege, auditing, and contract controls important. In attacks, a similar embedded model can be abused by intruders posing as trusted support staff, or by malware that survives because the customer never fully owns the configuration. In defenses, the best outcome is knowledge transfer: the customer learns how to run, tune, and secure the system after the specialist leaves.
