Firewall ruleset

The collection of rules that permits or blocks network traffic between systems.

A firewall ruleset is the collection of configuration rules that determines which network traffic a firewall permits, blocks, or otherwise handles. Rules commonly match details such as source and destination addresses, ports, protocols, and connection state. Together, they define the firewall’s practical access controls.

Rulesets matter because overly broad, outdated, or conflicting rules can expose systems to unauthorized access or disrupt legitimate services. In real environments, defenders review and document rule changes, remove unnecessary permissions, and check that enforced rules match written security policy. Attackers may benefit when misconfigurations leave services reachable that should be restricted; careful rule management helps reduce that exposure.
