A fan build is a project made by enthusiasts to recreate or reference a cultural image, scene, or object. It can involve crafts, props, electronics, or software, and may prioritize recognizable details over technical complexity.
In cyber security, the term is not inherently about an attack or security incident. However, fan builds that use connected devices, lighting controllers, or online services can introduce ordinary security considerations: secure default settings, trusted software, and careful handling of network access. Defenders should distinguish these hobby projects from malicious activity while evaluating any connected components on their actual behavior.
