Exposed server

A system reachable online without sufficient access restriction.

An exposed server is a system reachable over a network-often the public internet-without adequate access restrictions. Exposure can result from open network ports, weak or missing authentication, permissive cloud settings, or services unintentionally made public. Being reachable does not by itself prove that anyone accessed or stole data.

In cybersecurity, an exposed server can let unauthorized people view, alter, or use stored data and services. Attackers may search for publicly reachable systems, exploit vulnerable software, or take advantage of weak credentials. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying internet-facing assets, restricting access with firewalls or private networking, enforcing strong authentication, patching software, and monitoring access. Stored prompts, outputs, logs, and other business records should also be treated as sensitive data.
