An evidence chain is the documented path that shows who collected digital evidence, when it was collected, how it was stored, and every time it changed hands. In cyber security, this record is essential because logs, disk images, chat exports, and malware samples can be challenged if their handling is unclear.
A strong evidence chain helps prove integrity and authenticity: investigators can show that a file was not altered, swapped, or contaminated after seizure. Defenders use the same discipline in incident response by hashing artifacts, recording timestamps, controlling access, and preserving originals before analysis. Attackers often try to break that trust by deleting logs, planting false files, or forcing systems to overwrite data, so a clear evidence chain is what makes later forensics and legal action credible.
