ETCS (European Train Control System) is the train protection component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It supervises train movement and can provide in-cab signalling, helping enforce speed limits and prevent a train from exceeding its permitted movement authority. Its implementation varies by level and infrastructure; the term alone does not identify a particular line configuration.
ETCS matters to rail safety because it can automatically intervene when a train exceeds permitted limits, while interoperable standards support operation across networks. In real operations, crews may need special procedures when ETCS or another protection layer is unavailable or degraded, including movement restrictions and authorization checks. Defenders should ensure system status is clearly communicated and operational records are reliable. ETCS is distinct from legacy national systems such as LZB, even where both are used within the same railway network.
