EPICS Base is the core software framework for building distributed control systems used in scientific and industrial environments. It includes Input/Output Controllers (IOCs), which run control-system records and communicate with clients, allowing instruments and equipment to be monitored and controlled across a network.
Because EPICS Base supports operational processes, software flaws can affect availability as well as confidentiality or integrity. For example, a bug that causes an IOC to crash may interrupt monitoring or control until operators restore and verify the process; this does not by itself mean a system was breached. Defenders should inventory deployed versions, apply tested updates, restrict network access, segment control systems, and monitor for unexpected restarts or disconnects.
