Engineering trade-off

the balancing of benefits and constraints in a design.

An engineering trade-off is the process of balancing competing goals in a design. Improving one property often makes another worse: stronger security may reduce speed, tighter controls may reduce usability, and deeper inspection may increase cost or complexity. In cyber security, trade-offs are unavoidable because systems must stay both protected and usable.

This idea appears everywhere in real defenses and attacks. A defender may choose stricter authentication, slower but safer encryption, or more aggressive logging, accepting extra latency or storage use to gain visibility and control. Attackers also exploit trade-offs: they may target the easiest path rather than the strongest one, or avoid noisy techniques that raise detection risk. Understanding trade-offs helps security teams choose controls that fit the environment instead of chasing perfect protection that cannot be operated in practice.
