Engineering Intelligence

The use of engineering and process context to interpret operational or security events in a more meaningful way.

Engineering intelligence is the use of engineering knowledge and process context to interpret operational or security events. In industrial environments, this can include relating a cybersecurity alert to equipment, control logic, process conditions, or safety functions. The term does not have one fixed industry definition; its meaning depends on how a particular organization or product applies it.

This context can help OT defenders distinguish routine activity from changes that may affect production or safety, and prioritize investigation by operational impact rather than alert volume alone. For example, a change to a control system may be more significant if it affects equipment involved in a critical process. Using engineering data this way requires reliable, protected integrations and human review. Monitoring and response tools must be carefully tested and must not interfere with control or safety functions.
