Enforced spend cap

A billing control that can pause eligible usage once a configured threshold is reached.

An enforced spend cap is a billing control that pauses eligible usage after spending reaches a configured threshold. Unlike a budget alert, which only notifies an operator, a cap can actively limit further billable activity. The exact services and usage covered depend on the provider and the cap’s configuration.

In cyber security, this can limit financial damage if stolen credentials or an abused service account are used to generate large volumes of cloud or AI requests. It is a backstop, not a replacement for least privilege, credential protection, monitoring, and rapid revocation: some usage may not be eligible for the cap, and pausing services can disrupt legitimate workloads. Confirm which charges and resources the cap covers, and test how it behaves before relying on it.
