Encoded content is the information represented by a code’s visual pattern. In a QR code, the grid of dark and light modules stores data such as a web address or contact details. The pattern is the machine-readable representation; the encoded content is what a scanner reconstructs from it.
In cyber security, distinguishing the pattern from its payload matters because a QR code can conceal a destination that is not obvious from its appearance. Attackers may use QR codes to direct people to deceptive websites, while defenders can inspect or decode a code and verify its contents before opening or acting on them. Decoding reveals the data, but users should still assess whether a link or other payload is trustworthy.
