Effects pedal

A device used to modify an instrument’s audio signal, often for tone shaping.

An effects pedal is a device that changes an instrument’s audio signal, often to alter its tone or add effects such as distortion, delay, or modulation. Guitarists commonly connect pedals between an instrument and an amplifier, combining them into a signal chain. A compact pedal activated by foot switch is often called a stomp box.

Effects pedals are not inherently cybersecurity tools, but digital alternatives make the term relevant to software security. Platforms such as PiPedal can provide multiple effects and amplifier emulation in software rather than through separate hardware. This can simplify a setup, while making configuration, compatibility, software updates, and a reliable fallback important to maintaining the system. The broader principle applies to other software-defined workflows: convenience does not remove the need to understand the software a critical function depends on.
