An edge data centre is a computing facility located closer to users, devices or network access points than a centralised data centre. By processing data nearby, it can reduce latency, limit the amount of traffic sent over long-distance links and support time-sensitive services.
In cyber security, edge facilities extend the systems that organisations must protect and administer. They may host applications, data and network services, so defenders need to know who controls physical access, management consoles, identity systems and incident response. In real deployments, edge computing can support local processing for telecom or connected devices; attackers may target its workloads or administrative interfaces, while operators secure them with access controls, monitoring, patching and resilient recovery plans.
