E-bike conversion

The modification of a bicycle to add electric assistance.

An e-bike conversion is the modification of a conventional bicycle to add electric assistance, usually with a motor, battery, controller, wiring, and some kind of user interface. The result may look like an ordinary bike, but it now depends on an electrical power path and embedded control logic to manage speed, assist levels, braking behavior, and shutdown.

In cyber security, e-bike conversions matter because they create a small but real attack surface in a physical system. Custom controllers, displays, battery management parts, and charging interfaces can be miswired, altered, or tampered with if they are not designed and checked carefully. Defenders and builders look for predictable behavior, secure firmware or controller settings, clear status indicators, and safe inspection points. In real-world security work, the lesson is similar to IoT hardening: hidden electronics should still be understandable, verifiable, and easy to disable safely when something goes wrong.
