Dynamic forwarding

An SSH mode that can direct traffic to different destinations within one session.

Dynamic forwarding is an SSH tunneling mode that turns the SSH client into a local SOCKS proxy. Instead of mapping one local port to one fixed destination, the client can send different connections through the same encrypted session to different remote hosts and ports as needed. This makes it a flexible way to reach internal services without exposing them directly to the network.

In security work, dynamic forwarding is useful for temporary administration, testing, and controlled access to private systems. It also matters because the same flexibility can hide where traffic is really going. Attackers may use it for reconnaissance, pivoting, or bypassing network filtering, while defenders watch for unexpected SSH sessions that carry broad outbound traffic. Good controls include logging, time limits, and restricting who can create tunnels.
