Durable skill

A long-lasting human skill such as communication, leadership, or problem solving.

A durable skill is a human capability that remains useful across changing tools, roles, and technologies. Examples include communication, leadership, collaboration, and problem solving. Unlike knowledge of a particular programming language or product, these skills can transfer between different work settings.

In cyber security, durable skills help people coordinate incident response, explain risks, review code thoughtfully, and make sound decisions under pressure. They matter in attacks as well as defenses: social engineering often exploits gaps in communication or judgment, while effective teams share information and verify suspicious activity. A job posting that mentions a durable skill signals an employer’s stated expectation, not proof that candidates or teams possess it; clear definitions and practical assessment are needed.
