A download lure is a deceptive web page or prompt designed to persuade someone to download and run a malicious file. It may imitate a software vendor, installer, or familiar service, or use a trusted link or advertisement to make the download seem legitimate.
Download lures matter because they turn trust and user action into a route for malware delivery, without requiring attackers to compromise the legitimate platform being referenced. In real attacks, a fake installer page may lead users to a harmful file. Defend by navigating to the vendor’s known website directly, checking the publisher and file reputation, and treating unexpected installers with caution. Operating-system warnings can help, but should not be dismissed simply because the page looks familiar.
