Down payment

An upfront amount paid before the remaining balance is financed.

A down payment is an amount paid upfront when buying a product or taking out financing. The remaining purchase price is then paid immediately or repaid over time under the financing agreement. A plan with no down payment means no initial amount is required, but it does not by itself establish that the purchase has no other costs or conditions.

In digital checkout, the down payment affects how much is financed and what the buyer must pay at the start. Clear disclosure helps customers understand their obligations and compare offers. In security-sensitive commerce, providers should protect the personal and financial data used during checkout, while customers should review the repayment schedule, eligibility terms, and total cost before agreeing.
