Discord

A centralized chat platform used for servers, channels, and invite-based communities.

Discord is a centralized chat platform built around servers, channels, voice rooms, and invite-based membership. Unlike federated systems, the service and most of the identity and access controls are managed by Discord itself, while community operators set roles, permissions, and moderation rules inside each server.

In cyber security, Discord matters because it is a common place for communities, support teams, and threat actors alike. Attackers can abuse invite links, impersonate official servers, or send malicious messages and bot links to steal accounts or spread malware. During a platform migration, confusion about the “real” community space can also create a trust gap that phishers exploit. Defenders reduce this risk by publishing a single official invite source, restricting admin roles, reviewing bots, and using clear naming and verification so users can recognize legitimate servers.
