Digital Rights Management (DRM)

Controls that limit how digital content can be used, copied, or shared.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is technology that applies rules to digital content to limit how it can be opened, copied, printed, or shared. Controls may rely on encryption, identity checks, licensing, and software that enforces permissions. Unlike ordinary access controls on a storage system, DRM can be designed to remain attached to content after distribution.

In cyber security, DRM helps reduce unauthorized use or redistribution of files, media, and other digital material. Organizations may use it to control documents shared with customers, partners, or contractors, and may configure access to expire or be revoked. Its effectiveness depends on compatible clients, reliable identity and policy checks, and usable workflows. Depending on the system and configuration, recipients may still capture content through screenshots or other means, so DRM cannot guarantee that information will never escape its intended boundary.
