Digital concentration occurs when a small number of organizations control essential digital services or infrastructure, such as cloud platforms, identity systems, or communications networks. Dependence on a few providers can create single points of failure and make it harder for customers or public institutions to change providers, maintain services, or scrutinize decisions.
In cybersecurity, concentration can magnify the effects of an outage, compromise, or misuse of privileged access across many dependent organizations. Defenders can reduce these risks by assessing provider dependencies, maintaining tested recovery and exit plans, limiting access, and monitoring services independently. Concentration is not automatically unsafe, but resilience and accountability are harder to ensure when alternatives and oversight are limited.
