DevOps

A set of practices that combines software development and IT operations, often giving administrators access to production workflows.

DevOps is a set of practices and tools that brings software development and IT operations together to build, deploy, and maintain services. DevOps teams often use automated workflows and privileged tools to manage production systems, so their accounts and devices can have significant access.

This access makes DevOps environments valuable targets. If an attacker compromises a developer or administrator’s device or credentials, they may try to reach deployment systems, service containers, or production workflows. Defenses include hardened endpoints, multi-factor authentication, least-privilege permissions, separation between routine work and production administration, and monitoring of deployment activity. DevOps itself is not a security weakness; the risk depends on how access and operational controls are designed.
