Deterministic authorization is a rule-based way to decide whether a user, service, or AI agent is allowed to perform an action. The decision is made by explicit policies-such as role, resource, and action rules-not by asking an AI model to judge whether access seems appropriate.
In agentic systems, this separation matters because a model may misunderstand instructions or be manipulated by untrusted content. Authorization checks should run outside the model and enforce least privilege whenever an agent calls an API, changes a record, or triggers a workflow. For example, an agent may prepare a sensitive update, but a policy engine can deny the write unless the agent has the required permission or a human approves it. Logging these decisions also helps teams audit actions and limit damage.
