Detect

The first step in a credential defense workflow, focused on identifying exposed or risky secrets.

Detect is the first step in a credential defense workflow. It means finding exposed, risky, or otherwise unexpected secrets such as passwords, API keys, tokens, and certificates before they can be abused. Detection is not just about spotting a leak in a public repository; it also includes identifying credentials that are stale, overprivileged, duplicated, or stored in places that security teams do not monitor well.

In cyber security, detection matters because credentials often become the control point for access to systems, cloud services, and automation. Attackers look for hardcoded secrets, reused tokens, and leaked keys to gain entry without exploiting a traditional vulnerability. Defenders use detection tools to scan code, tickets, logs, chat systems, and infrastructure for secret exposure, then hand off to remediation such as rotation or revocation. On its own, detection is only visibility; its value comes from enabling a fast response before a secret becomes an active compromise.
