A derived transaction is a transfer identified by tracing funds from a known or listed blockchain address through later transactions. Depending on the tracing method, the trail may include funds split across addresses, transferred between tokens, or moved through swaps. The term describes a relationship inferred from transaction flows; it does not by itself establish who controls an address or prove that a transfer is criminal.
Investigators and virtual-asset services use derived-transaction analysis to identify possible downstream exposure to stolen or illicit funds. Exchanges and custodians may screen these transfers, preserve records, or escalate matches for review. Because tracing across swaps and other services can be uncertain, a match should be assessed with context and clear methodology rather than treated as proof. Prompt, well-documented analysis can help defenders respond while funds are still moving.
