A denominator is the total population or group that a percentage is calculated from. For example, if 43 out of 100 software job postings mention AI skills, the denominator is 100 postings, and the percentage is 43%.
In cybersecurity reporting and research, the denominator helps readers judge what a statistic represents and how broadly it may apply. A percentage without a clear denominator can be misleading: a figure based on a small or narrowly selected set of systems, users, or job postings may not describe a wider population. Defenders should check what was counted, how the sample was selected, and whether the denominator stayed consistent when comparing results over time.
