Deep observability

A monitoring approach that uses network-derived data to add context beyond standard logs and metrics.

Deep observability is a monitoring approach that combines network-derived data-such as packet details, traffic flows, and application metadata-with standard logs and metrics. It helps teams understand not only whether a system is failing, but how services and workloads communicate across networks, cloud platforms, and data centers.

In security, this added context can reveal unexpected connections, unusual east-west traffic, or activity that application logs do not capture. Defenders can correlate network behavior with identity or application events to investigate suspicious activity and reduce blind spots in hybrid environments. Deep observability supports detection and troubleshooting; it is not a preventive control by itself. Because network data may contain sensitive information, organizations should also apply access controls, data minimization, and appropriate retention limits.
