Decoy realism is how convincingly a fake asset-such as a server, file, or credential-resembles something real in an organization’s environment. A believable decoy can attract an attacker’s attention during reconnaissance or lateral movement instead of being immediately recognized and avoided.
Realism matters because interaction with a decoy can provide a useful warning of suspicious activity. However, an implausible or poorly placed decoy may be ignored, while excessive background interactions can create noise for defenders. Security teams should make decoys fit their environment and monitor whether they produce trustworthy alerts without requiring burdensome upkeep.
