Debounce

A method for filtering noisy button signals so one press is read correctly.

Debounce is the process of filtering noisy button signals so a single physical press is registered as one clean event. Mechanical switches do not move perfectly: when they close or open, the contacts can rapidly bounce between states for a few milliseconds. Without debouncing, a device may read one press as several presses or a release as a new input.

In cyber security, debounce matters because embedded systems and control panels often make security-relevant decisions from physical inputs. A bad signal can cause repeated actions, unstable state changes, or unreliable authentication steps on kiosks, appliances, and industrial interfaces. Defenders use hardware filters, timing logic, or firmware state machines to ignore spurious transitions. Good debouncing reduces accidental triggers and makes input handling more predictable, which is essential when a simple button can change access, power, or safety state.
