Data verification

the process of checking whether leaked or claimed data is authentic.

Data verification is the process of checking whether leaked or claimed data is genuine, accurate, and connected to the organization or people it is said to involve. It helps distinguish credible evidence from fabricated, altered, outdated, or misattributed material. A claim or sample alone does not prove that a breach occurred or establish how the data was obtained.

In practice, defenders can compare a safely handled sample with internal records, check whether fields and formats are consistent, and investigate relevant access logs and systems for signs of unauthorized activity. Verification matters because false assumptions can mislead incident response, while overlooking a genuine exposure can leave people at risk of fraud or phishing. Treat sensitive samples carefully, limit access, and avoid treating claimed record counts or financial totals as independently confirmed facts.
