In an extortion context, data publication is the release or threatened release of material an attacker claims to have obtained. A stated publication date is a pressure tactic: it gives the target a deadline and signals that files may be posted publicly if demands are not met.
The threat matters because exposed records could harm customers, business operations, and trust. However, a countdown or listing does not by itself prove that an intrusion occurred, data was stolen, or publication will happen. Defenders should preserve relevant evidence, investigate access and data-transfer activity, assess potential exposure, and prepare an incident response while clearly distinguishing verified facts from the actor’s claims.
