Data preservation

The practice of keeping information accessible over time, even after a platform changes or shuts down.

Data preservation is the practice of keeping information accessible and usable over time, even when a platform is upgraded, retired, or no longer supported. It is not just about making backups; it also includes export formats, migration paths, retention rules, and the ability to verify that data can still be opened later.

In cyber security, data preservation matters because access can fail long before data is truly deleted. A cloud service, account system, or authentication backend can become a single point of failure: if it shuts down, users may lose access to their content even when copies still exist. Defenders address this with offline archives, regular exports, integrity checks, and documented shutdown plans. Attackers sometimes exploit poor preservation practices by targeting systems with weak recovery options, knowing that lost access, broken migrations, or expired dependencies can make data effectively disappear.
