Data exfiltration claim

an assertion that files were taken, which still needs verification.

A data exfiltration claim is an assertion that an attacker copied files out of a network or cloud environment. It is not proof by itself. In many extortion campaigns, threat actors publish screenshots, file names, samples, or a leak countdown to pressure the target before any technical verification is complete.

This term matters because defenders must separate allegation from evidence. A real exfiltration event can require incident response, legal review, and notification; a false or exaggerated claim may only be a negotiation tactic. To verify it, teams check access logs, endpoint telemetry, cloud audit records, transfer traces, DLP alerts, and whether listed files match internal data. The goal is to confirm what was accessed, what left the environment, and whether the claim reflects actual data theft or only a threat designed to force a response.
