Cyber-risk management is the ongoing process of identifying threats to an organization’s systems, data, and operations, assessing their likelihood and impact, and choosing measures to reduce or monitor them. It connects technical security controls with business priorities, ownership, and oversight.
In practice, organizations assess risks across internal systems and external dependencies, such as technology vendors, then define responsibilities, access controls, monitoring, and review processes. During an attack or service disruption, clear risk ownership can help teams prioritize response and limit operational harm. Regular reviews help adapt controls as systems, suppliers, and threats change. Risk management can reduce exposure and support compliance, but it cannot eliminate risk or guarantee security.
