Credential-theft utility

software used to harvest usernames, hashes, or other login material from compromised systems.

A credential-theft utility is software designed to extract authentication material from a compromised host, such as usernames, password hashes, cached tokens, or session secrets. Attackers use these tools after an initial foothold to expand access, move laterally, or impersonate legitimate users.

In real intrusions, such utilities often run alongside reverse shells, service masquerading, or other post-exploitation tools. They matter because stolen credentials can bypass endpoint controls and make activity look normal. Defenders look for suspicious access to memory, LSASS probing, unexpected dumping of credential stores, and logins from accounts that never changed behavior.
