Coverage mapping is the process of relating an organization’s security detections to the threats, behaviors, techniques, or data sources they are intended to identify. It helps defenders see which areas have detection logic and where gaps may remain, rather than relying only on the number of rules in a security platform.
In practice, teams compare detection rules with a threat framework or internal risk priorities, then review whether the relevant logs are available and whether the rules work as expected. Mapping can guide testing and help prioritize new detections, but it does not prove that an attack will be detected: coverage depends on data quality, rule accuracy, and deployment. Used alongside testing and version control, coverage mapping gives security teams a clearer, more maintainable view of detection capabilities and blind spots.
